There is something akin to magic when, as an adult, you consider the possibility of dropping backwards into a deep backbend. A pursuit that ignites our imagination and inspires possibility, maybe even exhilaration, terror, and gratification. These “big” postures can bring us a sense of accomplishment, even when we don’t “drop back”. When we lean into the unknown, we often learn that we are wise, competent, and capable.
What would it take to pursue such a deep backbend? In this 4-week series, we will build the foundations of backbends and learn about the internal actions that are inherent in all backbends. We will build strength and explore flexibility. Deep backbend work demands mindfulness and develops wisdom, even as we play.
This class is for experienced yoga students. However, students do not need to be proficient in backbends or inversions. Everyone will use props including blocks, blankets, straps, and chairs. Adaptations, options, and modifications are always given. Students may elect to have hands on assists from the teacher and/or other students.
