Feet and Lower Body - Step Into the New Year!
with Leslie Wright

In January’s Sumptuous Sunday (An-Absolutely-No-Work-Workshop), we will spend time exploring and cultivating the possibilities of our magnificent feet and lower body. We will begin our investigation with a discussion about the general structure of feet, followed by a series of playful movements and stretches meant to awaken our awareness of the textures of our own unique feet, ankles, and shins.

Sumptuous Sundays at The Shala offers participants a once-a-month opportunity to withdraw from the outward pulling, often multi-tasking, demands of their lives in order to enter into a peaceful space where they will be encouraged to do only ONE thing: They will be encouraged to turn their focus inward and to give themselves the gift of their own attention.

Each session will begin with leisurely self-massage explorations using Yoga Tune Up Therapy Balls. These massage sequences are designed to both reveal patterns of tension as well as to soothe them. We will illuminate body blind spots - areas of stiffness or discomfort- in order to nurture them. Next, we will enhance the releases from the massage with slow, gentle movements followed by delicious stretches. Finally, the participants will be shown how to prepare for themselves sumptuous, supportive yoga structures using bolsters, blankets, and blocks. And then, once the structures are prepared, everyone will be encouraged to lie down upon them and to settle into a state of deep rest. Wandering minds will be engaged with guided meditations.

All participants will leave the experience with ideas and techniques that they can explore at home.Appropriate for all levels. Class size is limited to 14 students.
$40 for workshop OR $55 for workshop plus your own set of Yoga Tune Up Therapy Balls. Each workshop may use different size balls!

Winter Solstice Practice 2024 (In-studio or Live online)

“After the longest night, tomorrow we sing up the dawn. There is a rejoicing that, even in the darkest time, the sun is not vanquished. As of tomorrow, the days begin to get longer as the light of day grows. While the gentle winter sun slowly opens its eyes, let us all bring more light and compassion into the world.” (― Dacha Avelin)

WINTER SOLSTICE PRACTICE w/ Linda Meacci

Winter Solstice Season is a natural time to slow the rhythm down, pause, listen to ourselves and place our attention on recognizing our Inner Light. As we embrace ourselves more fully - the light, shadows and what happens in between, we open ourselves to the intelligence of our own Life Force and our desire to evolve as human beings and spiritual beings. It’s a long journey - for lifetimes possibly.

Winter Solstice offers us the possibility to remember who we are becoming.

One may ask: “What am I ready to see more clearly in myself?” or “What do I recognize about these moments that are different than before?”

In this Winter Solstice Practice, we go on a journey of slow, steady movement, giving space for our rhythm of Brahmana (expansion) and Langhana (deep settling). We explore and co-regulate our nervous systems through asana (shapes and postures), creative movement, transitions, sound and rest. There is also time to listen to meaningful solstice music and messages. This isn’t a complicated yoga practice, but a profound one!

This practice is open to everyBody! Accessibility is important, we hope is to you too.

Join yourself and the collective community to usher in the Winter Season.

10% of proceeds go to a The Friendship Circle, “a community-based program that brings together people of diverse abilities and interests”. In honor of a special 23-year old who benefited from this community, grew into a volunteer and is no longer with us.

Sliding-scale Pricing

$30 Community Price – For those with financial stress (8 spots)

$40 Full Price – For those able to pay

$50 Pay It Forward – Helps provide the sliding scale

$100 Pay It Forward PLUS an extra $50 donation Friendship Circle

Steps to Dropping Back with Marla Tortorice (In Studio and Online)

  • The Shala of Pittsburgh Ashtanga Yoga (map)

Build the prerequisites—and the confidence—for dropping back into urdvha dhanurasana with Marla Tortorice in this two-hour workshop.

Dropping back is a more advanced movement. You might already be capable, and you're just missing the technique. You might already practice dropbacks, and you just want to learn to slow them down. Or, you might not be anywhere close, yet, and you want to learn what you need to work on to be able to dropback in the future.

 This workshop is designed to:

  1. help you identify what YOU as an individual need to work on in this moment in time

  2. give you the guidance to work on those areas

  3. emphasize that repetition is the way forward

It is recommended that you have a comfortable urdvha dhanurasana before signing up for the workshop.

All participants get access to the recorded class for 60 days.

$50 – Attending in the studio (15% off for Shala Members)

$40 – Attending live online (15% off for Shala Members)

Marla Tortorice, 200 RYT, has been a vinyasa-based practitioner since 2018, but, looking for more, found a home in Ashtanga during the summer of 2022. She is now a dedicated student of the Intermediate Series, has completed a Level I Mentorship Program with Taylor Hunt, and is working on Level II.  Marla approaches her teaching the same way she approaches her practice—a daily search for both effort and ease. Asking more of yourself, finding your edge, but at the same time moving from a place of softness and surrender. In her experience, it is in that discrimination where we find steadiness.  Marla regularly shares pieces of her personal practice and teaching on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Learn to Thrive: A Deep Dive into Yin Yoga and Your Nervous System

with Sara Feley, MA, LMFT, EMDR level 1, PACT level 1, YTT

Sunday, 1pm-4pm, August 25, 2024

Spend a compelling Sunday afternoon exploring the complex, life- sustaining qualities of the autonomic nervous systems. The workshop will incorporate an experiential lecture, playful community-building, gentle movement, restorative yin yoga postures, and breathing practices designed to release stress. Finally, Sara Feley will guide the group into experiencing the benefits-and sometimes the challenges-of a period of sustained stillness.

As the members of the group investigate their internal neurological mapping and gain insight into how they themselves-with practice-can cultivate feelings of calm, they will learn that they can return to this state again and again and again. And that feelings of calm will open the way to feelings of thriving.

All participants will leave the experience with ideas and techniques that they can explore at home.

Appropriate for all levels.

$65

A WEEKEND with Marque Garaux
June 7-9, 2024

This ASANA INTENSIVE weekend package includes 4 workshops and 2 classes (Mysore or led). The weekend intensive will divide the series up into its base elements. We will anatomically break down forward folds and backbends, hip opening, twists, and of course the lift up and jump back. This weekend is perfect for all Ashtanga students and even practitioners of other vinyasa based practices. Notebooks or phones for recording are encouraged.

Friday, June 7, 2024
6pm-8pm - Lift Up!
Saturday, June 8, 2024
8:30am-10:30am - Mysore Class
1pm-3pm - The Spine: A User’s Guide to Flexion and Extension
3:30pm-5:30pm - The Hips: Unlocking Leg Behind the Head
Sunday, June 9, 2024
8:30am-10:30am - Mysore Class noon-2pm - Simplifying the Twists

Marque Garaux, a US Marine Veteran, long time rock climber and overall outdoor enthusiast, discovered Ashtanga Yoga while seeking different ways to alleviate his lower back pain. After noticing an almost immediate physical change, Marque then slowly began to see other positive changes happening in his life as well. In the fall of 2014 Marque decided to follow in the footsteps of the teachers that he most respected and applied for study at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI). Marque received the blessing as an Authorized Level 2 teacher from Sharath on December 12th, 2017, during his morning practice.  Marque is the owner of Great Lakes Ashtanga Yoga which is located on eight wooded acres in Geneva, Ohio. He spends about 6 months there per year offering a full Mysore program, private lessons, and workshops. The other half of the year is dedicated to his travels where he reconnects with his students around Europe and with his teacher in India. Find out more at http://www.greatlakesashtangayoga.com/ or @yogamarque or @greatlakesashtangayoga

Friday, June 7, 2024

6pm-8pm - Lift Up!

The key to effortless looking strength is to understand the foundational rules of gravity and balance. A lifetime of climbing has taught Marque that gravity is always at work on our physical bodies. It never rests. To create the illusion of weightlessness, we must work harder and smarter. During this 2-hour workshop Marque will explain how to target specific muscle groups that are key to building a solid foundation that we can balance on and move through space.

Saturday, June 8, 2024

8:30am-10:30am        Mysore Class

1PM-3PM       The Spine: A User's Guide to Flexion and Extension

The way you move today, greatly affects the way you will move tomorrow. The average individual on any given day will move their spine into flexion far more than they will move it into extension. Our daily activities and gravity are moving us forward at such a highly repetitive rate that the soft tissues connected to the spine will inevitably weaken over time, at some point the spine will lose its natural S curve, and we will be left with a chronic pain that makes us want to move less and less. This is all avoidable if you learn to balance your flexion and extension on your mat and carry that into your daily life.

3:30pm-5:30pm        The Hips: Unlocking Leg Behind the Head

In this workshop, we will take a deep look at the hips and the spine.  Studying the proper alignment and engagement required to do these postures safely. Everyone will learn techniques to self-assist, regardless of their current level of mobility.  We will also have a chance to learn and practice how to safely assist others. The workshop will include Marque’s 15-minute, nightly hip sequence. Students will receive a video link to continue this sequence as they navigate the journey to unlock their hips.

Sunday, June 9, 2024

8:30am-10:30am        Mysore Class

12pm-2pm        Simplifying the Twists

When talking to other yogis, we rarely come across the students who say that twisting postures are among their favorites. And because of this, these postures are not given their fair share of time in the spotlight. This workshop intends to make twists simple and fun while emphasizing their importance for the health of the thoracic spine.

Full Workshop price is $275
Individual Sessions $40-$60

Cancellation Policy: Written notification of cancellation of any portion of the workshop series (full weekend or individual workshops) must be sent to info@theshalapittsburgh.com no less than 72 hours prior to the start date/time of the workshop to receive a refund. Workshop is non-transferable.

Get in Touch with your Nervous System: Yin Yoga 4-Week Series

w/Sara Beth Feley

Four Tuesdays, 6:30pm-8pm

May 28, June 4, June 11, and June 18, 2024

Spend some quality time getting to know your nervous system.  This series is an invitation to go deeper inside and create a connection with your inner world.  Learn tools that can be used in daily life - when you have had a rough day, or moments of high stress, or moments of distress.

This four-part Yin Yoga series, led by Sara Beth Feley, will introduce methods for developing nervous system regulation.  Sara will teach participants various strategies to cultivate awareness and understanding of the body’s feedback, which in turn will aid in developing and expanding one’s felt sense of safety.  Sara will discuss the polyvagal theory and how to implement methods of self-regulation into a yoga practice. Such regulation practices are helpful for processing the full arc of human experience.

Each class will incorporate gentle movement, restorative postures, and stillness. Exploring the benefits—and sometimes challenges—of relaxation, participants will be encouraged to receive the wisdom of the body with child-like curiosity.

All participants will leave the experience with ideas and techniques that they can explore at home.

Appropriate for all levels.

$100 for 4-Week Series OR $35 for Individual Class

Cancellation Policy: We must receive cancellation notice in writing to info@theshalapittsburgh.com at least 72 hours prior to the workshop start date in order to issue you a refund. Otherwise, workshop is non-refundable. Workshop fee is non-transferable.

Savasana as Death Meditation w/Bethany Narajka

Saturday, May 18, 2024, 1pm-2:30pm

Why do we lie on the floor and take the position of a corpse after every asana session? The much-beloved rest that concludes our practice receives so little discussion, and yet it provides a profound invitation to reflect on our mortality.

Join Bethany Narajka, death doula and yoga instructor, for a workshop that explores the subject of death in historical and modern postural yoga through interactive lecture, gentle asana practice, savasana, and small group discussion. This 90-minute workshop includes gentle asana to help move around the complicated energy that shows up from talking about death. We will settle into a comfortable, supported savasana. We invite you to dress in comfortable clothes and bring a pen and notebook.

Note: While this workshop is not specifically designed for grief support, we recognize that some emotions may arise. At all times, you will have the flexibility to step away for a break and then return to the group as needed. Our aim is that the workshop feels intriguing and supportive.

Students with a wide range of skill levels and backgrounds including students that are new to yoga, are welcome. Bring a journal and pen or use paper and pen provided by the teacher.

$40 for the workshop

Bethany Narajka is a yoga instructor (RYT 200), death doula (NEDA proficient), PA certified visual art teacher, and dancer. In 2012, she began training in Ashtanga yoga while living in South Korea, an experience which continues to inform her teaching and personal practice. She believes in teaching yoga for all bodies and remains committed to finding new ways to support every student who walks into her classes. She is a member of Pittsburgh Community Deathcare, and currently teaches yoga at The Irma Freeman Center and dance at Art in Motion dance studio. Follow her @jellosaladlady on Instagram.

May 12, 2024, 1pm-3pm

Take a brief reprieve from the cares that absorb your daily attentions; and instead, give to YOURSELF the gift of your own attention.

You will be guided through a soothing series of self-massage techniques using Yoga Tune Balls that will gently loosen muscular knots. The massage will be followed by a sustained sequence of supportive yoga poses—using bolsters, blankets, and blocks—where you will be invited to absorb the replenishing benefits of deep rest.

All participants will leave the experience with ideas and techniques that they can explore at home.

Appropriate for all levels.

Self-Massage using Yoga Tune Up Balls for Athletes of All Levels.

For the final 30 minutes of the class, participants will be encouraged to revisit the areas of their own bodies where they discovered massage techniques of particular value to them in their pursuit of their sport. During this time, the instructor will help participants clarify techniques and strategies so that each participant will feel confident to continue with explorations of self-care on their own.

Appropriate for all levels. All necessary props will be provided by the instructor. If you would like to purchase your own Yoga Tune Up Therapy balls, you may select that option at time of workshop registration or at the end of the workshop.

Letting Go: Yoga Nidra Workshop w/Ashvarya Sinha

Sunday, March 24, 2024, 1pm-2:15pm

Embark on a transformative journey of deep relaxation and inner growth with our "Letting Go: Yoga Nidra Workshop."

In this 75-minute session, we'll explore yogic sleep techniques, writing exercises, and silent self-reflection practices designed to regulate the nervous system and facilitate profound relaxation.

Experience the remarkable benefits of deep relaxation as you release worries, tensions, and distractions, and connect with your inner tranquility through guided visualization and journaling.

Throughout the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to identify and release mental, emotional, and energetic blockages that obscure your inner radiance, allowing your true essence to shine forth.  Moreover, you'll cultivate greater self-awareness and compassion by observing and accepting all aspects of yourself with loving-kindness.

This workshop welcomes participants of all levels, including beginners, and requires no prior experience with Yoga Nidra. Simply come as you are, with an open heart and a willingness to explore the profound depths of your being.

Bring your own journal or paper and your favorite writing instrument. The studio has plenty of mats, blankets, bolsters and folding chairs or you can bring your props.

Sign up here for $40 (15% off for Members). Space is limited to 8 students.

Ashvarya Sinha is a yoga teacher, astrologer, reiki practitioner and healer whose offerings are rooted in the Yogic tradition of the east while immersed in the scientific knowledge of the West. Her classes and personal practice draw inspiration from various styles of yoga but are centred around breath, mindfulness, and humour. Owing to her background in Psychology and Performing arts, she is always exploring the mind-body-breath connection. Ashvarya believes in the philosophy of ‘listen to your body, pause and do what feels good.’ She fosters an environment where students experience the therapeutic benefits of yoga as well as guided meditation.

Sumptuous Sundays (an Absolutely-No-Work Workshop) - March 2024

  • The Shala of Pittsburgh Ashtanga Yoga (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The Side Line - Temple, Jaw, Deltoid, Side Ribs, QL, IT Band, Shin, and Adductors

All participants will leave the experience with ideas and techniques that they can explore at home.

Appropriate for all levels.

$40 for workshop OR $55 for workshop plus your own Coregous Yoga Tune Up Therapy Ball.

Leslie Wright shares her deep interest in physical anatomy in her classes, and over time, her students strengthen their own understanding of how their bodies move. Leslie is also a certified Yoga Tune Up instructor—which means that her classes are creative explorations of yoga poses using a diversity of props: blocks, straps, blankets, half-dome rollers, and especially massage balls of various sorts and sizes. Her students routinely use all of the toys in the toy box to support their explorations.
